Target Audience:
Open to individuals in and out of healthcare roles that are interested in learning specific steps to support someone in a mental health crisis.
Program Description:
The symptoms of mental health or substance use disorder can be difficult to detect. Even if friend and family notice a change, they may not know how to intervene or direct the person to proper treatment. All too often, those in need of mental health services do not get them until it is too late. First Aiders learn how to offer initial help in both noncritical mental health or substance use situations and in a crisis using Mental Health First Aid 5-step action plan known as “ALGEE”. – Mental Health First Aid USA
Participants who successfully complete the course will be Certified in Mental Health First Aid.
Participants will learn to:
- Identify specific risk factors for individuals struggling with mental health
- Recognize the warning symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, suicidal thoughts, and non-suicidal self-injury
- Utilize the 5-step action plan “ALGEE”
- Understand the importance of early intervention
- Provide strategies on how and when to give support to someone in need
- Identify next steps when referring a person to appropriate support and services
A range of studies, including randomized controlled trials, have shown that Mental Health First Aid training improves knowledge, reduces stigmatizing attitudes, and increases first aid actions toward individuals with mental health challenges.
